Nusa Penida Tree House Information: Molenteng Tree House
Nusa Penida Tree House - Have you ever thought of living on a secluded island away from the crowds? Sleeping in a wooden tree house and enjoying it all alone or with your partner? Wake up to the sound of the waves and the expanse of the blue ocean?
It's all possible on the island of Nusa Penida in Bali, and it's all available on a budget - it's called the Nusa Penida Tree House!
This is on the island of Nusa Penida, and the full name of this place is Rumah Asli Molenteng ('Rumah Pohon' is Bahasa Indonesia called for tree house, and Molenteng is the name of the village).
Actually, this is not the only tree house in Nusa Penida or Bali (there is also one in Suwehan), but this one was the first. This guide will tell you how to get there!

Visiting Nusa Penida Tree House
We first visited the treehouse in 2017, and then went back and stayed there the following week, and it was probably one of the coolest things we've done on our travels.
The rooms and beds are very simple, but the views and location are off-world. It's guaranteed to make you feel like a modern day Robinson Crusoe.
When we stayed at the Nusa Penida Tree House, we were lulled to sleep by the sound of crashing waves and awakened by the rays of the morning sun over Raja Lima Island, with dolphins and manta rays swimming as our morning sights.
Sadly, this house is no longer a hidden gem as you can find all the information on the internet, but we still think this tree house is one of the most extraordinary places in Bali.
Even if you don't have time to stay overnight, you can still visit and take pictures of the tree house.
The entrance fee is IDR 10,000/person for local tourists and IDR 25,000/person for foreign tourists.
We will include a map of the location of the Nusa Penida Tree House to make it easier for you to get there:
If you want to visit the Nusa Penida Tree House on a day tour, you can join the East Nusa Penida Tour Package and combine it with Nusa Penida Snorkelling. You can book all these services at the Affordable Nusa Penida Tour.
Staying at Nusa Penida Tree House
You can make a reservation on an online travel agent or ask your travel agent in Nusa Penida. Staying at the Nusa Penida Tree House costs around IDR 550,000 ($35 USD) per night. The price is quite reasonable for the great experience you get. You can get this service when you book a 2 day 1 night Nusa Penida tour package.
There's a small outhouse nearby so you've got the basics, but of course there's no WiFi (I sometimes had weak but barely usable 3G reception).
As of 2021, there are actually three treehouses here. We stayed in treehouse number 2, which is on the edge of the cliff at the front and probably has the best view.
You can stay in any of them as they all have views of the island and nearby cliffs.
A third treehouse was just added in 2018 and appears to be the most luxurious, but I haven't had a chance to see what it looks like inside.
Believe it or not, all the treehouses here have electricity for fans and lighting, which is useful if you're staying overnight.

If you continue walking past the tree house to a point called Pulau Seribu or also called Raja Lima, there is a small Balinese temple and beautiful views of the island like Raja Ampat in Papua.
If you want to experience the feeling of staying in this tree house, you can join the 2 days and 1 night Nusa Penida tour itinerary.
Now the Nusa Penida Tree House has become a tourist attraction. There are rows of gaudy artificial bird nests that you can pay to take pictures of, and they have built huge concrete bathrooms that ruin the natural feel, but at least they are safer and more private. The tree houses are still nice to visit and hopefully someone will step in and take care of this place as it should be. In the meantime, because of the fantastic views, this may be the best treehouse Nusa Penida - Bali has to offer.
